The right surveyor is not always the nearest one

A marine survey is only as useful as the surveyor conducting it. The inspection may be thorough, but if the surveyor’s accreditation is not accepted by the insurer, the bank, or the flag state authority, the report does not achieve what you needed it to.

Every surveyor in our network holds relevant professional accreditations. Some are accepted by insurance companies as appraisers; others are approved to conduct flag state surveys and issue certificates that satisfy registration requirements. For commercial vessels, the relevant flag state may require an inspection by a Recognised Organisation rather than an independent surveyor. We know which type of surveyor applies to your situation before we make any introduction.

We can also manage the practical side of the survey process, arranging timing, co-ordinating dry-docking or lifting where an out-of-water inspection is required, and ensuring the resulting report is formatted to satisfy the relevant authority or institution.

What we can arrange for you

Which type of survey do you need?

Four distinct survey types, each with a different purpose, a different scope, and different requirements for the surveyor conducting it.

For private vessel owners

Private owner

Pre-purchase survey

A pre-purchase survey is the independent technical inspection you commission before completing the purchase of a vessel. The surveyor assesses the structural condition of the hull, the mechanical and electrical systems, safety equipment, and any signs of damage or deferred maintenance.

The report gives you an independent picture of the vessel’s actual condition, before you commit. It may identify issues that justify a renegotiation of the price, additional conditions on the sale, or in some cases a decision not to proceed. This type of survey is one of the most important steps in any vessel purchase, and one that is too often skipped on smaller boats.

The surveyor does not need to meet specific flag state accreditation requirements for a pre-purchase survey, but should hold recognised professional qualifications, typically membership of a body such as the IIMS, or a national equivalent. All surveyors in our network do.

Private owner & commercial

Appraisal survey

An appraisal survey – sometimes called a valuation survey – establishes the current market value of a vessel. It is typically required when a bank or lender is involved in financing the purchase, when insurance cover needs to reflect an agreed value, or when a vessel is being imported and customs or VAT authorities require a declared market value.

An appraisal survey is usually less extensive than a full condition survey. It focuses on the vessel’s market value rather than a detailed technical assessment of every system, though significant defects relevant to value will be noted. The surveyor conducting an appraisal for insurance purposes must typically be accepted by the relevant insurer. We only work with surveyors who hold the accreditations required for their report to be acted upon.

For commercial operators and professionals

Commercial & registration

Flag state survey

Certain flag states require a survey as part of the vessel registration process, typically for commercial vessels, vessels above certain size thresholds, or vessels being re-registered from another flag state. The survey assesses whether the vessel meets the safety standards and construction requirements set by that flag state’s regulations.

Who can conduct a flag state survey depends entirely on the flag state and the type of vessel. Some flag states accept an independent surveyor with the appropriate accreditation. Others require the inspection to be carried out by – or under the oversight of – a Recognised Organisation (RO) formally delegated by the flag state. We advise on which applies before arranging anything.

If you are registering a vessel and a survey is required, we co-ordinate the survey as part of the registration process, ensuring the report is produced in the right format, meets the flag state’s requirements, and is delivered in time to support the registration application.

Commercial operators

Commercial vessel certification survey

Commercial vessel operators – diving companies, charter operations, passenger services, support vessels – are subject to flag state requirements that go beyond standard pleasure craft registration. These typically include initial certification surveys and periodic re-inspection surveys to maintain validity.

The surveyor or inspection body required depends on the flag state and the commercial code under which the vessel operates. Some flag states have their own commercial yacht codes with specific inspector requirements. Others delegate to Recognised Organisations. The survey scope, frequency, and the qualifications the inspector must hold are all determined by the flag state, not the vessel owner.

We identify the correct survey route for your vessel, flag state, and commercial operation, and connect you with a surveyor or RO that meets those requirements. Where the survey forms part of an initial commercial registration, we manage both together.

Accredited surveyors ….. and when a Recognised Organisation is required

The accreditation required from a marine surveyor depends on what the survey report needs to achieve. We only work with surveyors whose credentials match the task.

Accredited independent surveyors

For insurance appraisal surveys, the surveyor must additionally be accepted by the relevant insurer as a qualified appraiser. We confirm this before making any introduction.

An independent marine surveyor holds professional qualifications issued by a recognised industry body. These qualifications confirm that the surveyor has the technical knowledge and experience to assess vessels to an accepted standard. For many survey purposes – pre-purchase, insurance appraisal, and a number of flag state surveys – an accredited independent surveyor is sufficient.

Accreditations held by surveyors in our network include membership or fellowship of bodies such as:

  • International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS)
  • National flag state-specific surveyor bodies

For insurance appraisal surveys, the surveyor must additionally be accepted by the relevant insurer as a qualified appraiser. We confirm this before making any introduction.

Recognised Organisations (ROs)

A Recognised Organisation is a classification society or inspection body that a flag state has formally authorised to carry out statutory surveys and issue certificates on its behalf. Where a flag state requires RO involvement, an independent surveyor – however well qualified – cannot produce a report that satisfies the requirement.

Major Recognised Organisations operating in European waters include:

  • Lloyd’s Register (LR)
  • Bureau Veritas (BV)
  • Det Norske Veritas (DNV)
  • Registro Italiano Navale (RINA)
  • Germanischer Lloyd (now part of DNV)

Whether an RO is required depends on the flag state, the vessel type, its size, and the specific certification being sought. Lorrendraaier advises on this as part of the registration process and co-ordinates with the relevant RO where required.

All surveyors in our network are independent

Every surveyor we work with is independent, they have no financial interest in the outcome of the survey, no relationship with the seller of a vessel being inspected, and no incentive to produce a favourable report for any party other than the one instructing them. This independence is the foundation of a survey’s usefulness.

For pre-purchase surveys in particular, it is important that the surveyor is instructed by and reports to the buyer, not the seller or the broker. We facilitate this clearly when arranging a survey on your behalf.

How we arrange a survey

We keep the process straightforward. Your job is to tell us what you need, we handle the rest.

Tell us about the vessel and the survey purpose

Vessel type, size, current location, flag state, and what the survey needs to achieve. For commercial vessels, the intended use and flag state determine which type of surveyor is required, we establish this before arranging anything.

We identify the right surveyor

We match the survey requirement to a surveyor in our network with the appropriate accreditation, accepted by the insurer, the flag state authority, or the relevant Recognised Organisation as required. Geography and availability are considered alongside credentials.

Logistics co-ordinated

We arrange the survey appointment and, where required, co-ordinate dry-docking or lifting. For flag state surveys forming part of a registration, we ensure the timing fits within the registration process so the report is available when it is needed.

Survey report delivered

The surveyor delivers the report directly to you, or, for registration purposes, in the format required by the flag state authority. We are available to discuss the findings and advise on any next steps that arise from them.

Why arrange a survey through us?

Finding a surveyor is easy. Finding one whose accreditation matches what the flag state, insurer, or bank actually requires is less straightforward. That is where we add value.

We only work with accredited surveyors

Every surveyor in our network holds the relevant professional accreditations for their area of work. We do not introduce unqualified surveyors regardless of availability or cost. A survey that cannot be acted upon is not a survey, it is wasted time and money.

We know what the flag state actually requires

Flag state survey requirements vary significantly between registers. Whether an independent surveyor is accepted, or whether an RO is required, depends on the flag state and vessel type. We determine this before arranging anything, not after a survey has been conducted and rejected.

Survey and registration managed together

Where a survey is required as part of a registration, we handle both. The survey is timed and scoped to satisfy the registration requirements, and the report goes directly into the registration process. There is no handover between a surveyor and a separate registration agent.

You reach a person, not a service desk

You call and Boudewijn answers. Survey arrangements often involve questions about timing, logistics, and what the report needs to contain. You should be able to get a direct and informed answer without submitting a ticket and waiting.

We co-ordinate the practical logistics

Surveys requiring dry-docking or lifting involve yard bookings, timing constraints, and additional cost. We manage that co-ordination, so the survey happens at the right time, at the right facility, with the right surveyor in attendance.

Your data is handled with care

All personal and vessel data shared in the course of arranging a survey is handled in strict accordance with GDPR, stored securely, used only for the purpose of the engagement, and never passed on to third parties beyond those directly involved.

Questions about yacht surveys

Common questions from both private owners and commercial operators. If your situation is not covered here, just give us a call.

A pre-purchase survey is a technical inspection of a vessel carried out before a sale is completed. The surveyor assesses the structural condition of the hull, mechanical and electrical systems, safety equipment, and any other aspects relevant to the vessel’s seaworthiness and value. The report gives the buyer an independent picture of what they are purchasing, including defects or deferred maintenance that may not be visible during a viewing. It is one of the most important steps in any vessel purchase.

An appraisal survey establishes the current market value of a vessel. It is typically required when a bank or lender is financing the purchase, when the vessel is being imported and customs or VAT authorities require a declared value, or when an insurance company requires confirmation of the insured value. The surveyor must typically be accepted by the relevant insurer or authority as a qualified appraiser, we only work with surveyors who hold that acceptance.

For private pleasure craft, a survey is not always required as part of the registration process, though some flag states require one for older vessels or those above certain length or tonnage thresholds. For commercial registration, a survey is almost always required. We advise on whether a survey is needed for your specific vessel, flag state, and intended use as part of the registration process.a

A flag state survey is an inspection required by the flag state as part of the vessel registration process, typically for commercial vessels or vessels above certain size thresholds. It assesses whether the vessel meets the safety standards and construction requirements set by that flag state’s regulations. Depending on the flag state, the survey must be conducted by an accredited independent surveyor or by a Recognised Organisation (RO) delegated by the flag state to conduct inspections on its behalf.

No. A pre-purchase survey should always be instructed and paid for by the buyer, and the surveyor should report to the buyer — not the seller or the broker. If the seller arranges the survey, the surveyor’s independence is compromised regardless of their qualifications. We arrange pre-purchase surveys directly for buyers, with the report going to you as the instructing party.

Yes. Where the survey requires an out-of-water inspection – as most thorough condition surveys and many flag state surveys do – we co-ordinate the logistics: identifying a suitable yard, arranging the lift, timing it alongside the surveyor’s availability, and ensuring the vessel is ready for inspection. This avoids the common problem of a survey being delayed or compromised because the logistics were not planned in advance.
