The Marine Treaty of 1674 between The Netherlands and England was one such notable agreement \u2013 and a piece (albeit reprinted) that Lorrendraaier now possesses!<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>by <strong>Caitlin Greyling<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As with many older books and documents, this treaty bears a rather long and flattering title; <em>Treaty Marine Between the Most Serene and Mighty Prince Charles II. by the Grace of God King of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith and the High and Mighty Lords the States General of the United Netherlands.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two greatest European maritime powers, the two had clashed violently for decades. As mentioned on page 122 in <a href=\"https:\/\/ia601504.us.archive.org\/8\/items\/in.ernet.dli.2015.81529\/2015.81529.A-Calender-Of-The-Court-Minutes-Of-The-East-India-Company-1674-1676_text.pdf\"><strong><em>The Court Minutes Of The East India Company 1674-1676<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the treaty was forged as a result of peace being restored after the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_Westminster_(1674)\">Treaty of Westminster 1674<\/a>, shortly after the <a href=\"https:\/\/geheugen.delpher.nl\/en\/geheugen\/pages\/collectie\/Nederland+en+Engeland%3A+de+band+tussen+twee+naties\/De+Engels-Nederlandse+oorlogen\">Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672\u20131674)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A number of prestigious statesmen and dignitaries were involved in the signing, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sir_George_Downing,_1st_Baronet\">Sir George Downing<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joan_Corver\">Joan Corver<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyofparliamentonline.org\/volume\/1660-1690\/member\/thompson-sir-william-1614-81\">Sir William Thompson<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Colepeper,_2nd_Baron_Colepeper\">Lord Thomas Culpeper<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinelives.org\/wiki\/John_Buckworth\">John Buckworth<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyofparliamentonline.org\/volume\/1660-1690\/member\/ford-sir-richard-1614-78\">Sir Richard Ford<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let the lofty title fool you, though \u2014 at just 15 pages long, it\u2019s no scholar&#8217;s tome. In fact, the treaty is quite a quick and straightforward read. That is if you\u2019re familiar with Dutch and Old English script. You see, this particular volume is the Dutch translation. Parts of which we\u2019ve translated to modern-day English, all the better to enlighten you.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3603 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/The-Marine-Treaty-of-1674.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1004\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/The-Marine-Treaty-of-1674.png 800w, http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/The-Marine-Treaty-of-1674-239x300.png 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Notable Regulations<\/h3>\n<p>Bearing distinctly archaic lettering not dissimilar to that of Old English, the Treaty Marine isn\u2019t the easiest on the eyes. However \u2014 from passports to oaths and declarations \u2014 its contents shed a lot of light on the newly-founded seafaring regulations of the day once deciphered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When drawing up this treaty, the focus appeared to be on encouraging fair and friendly trade. If a skipper followed all the rules, not only was he entitled to entry into Dutch or English waters. He was guaranteed \u201call the assistance necessary\u201d and \u201ca favourable welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3605 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Page-14.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Page-14.png 800w, http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Page-14-300x193.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><em>A warm welcome is promised to skippers who follow the rules, including paying tolls and declaring ship ownership and TUNS (weight).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also notice a number of spaces left blank in the excerpt of page 14 published above. All of these spaces were placed in the text for the purpose of filling in necessary details, as it is essentially a form template. Given on 2026 in the year of Our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(followed by the signature of the representatives of the King of England and of the States-General of the United Dutch Provinces)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The Reprint\u2019s Publisher<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The treaty mentions that it was published by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Q56231006\">Paulus Scheltus (1664-1748)<\/a>. His printing or publishing house was responsible for publishing this particular reprint, as he would not yet have been of age when the treaty was first finalized. The original was printed by <a href=\"https:\/\/openlibrary.org\/publishers\/Printed_by_John_Bill_and_Christopher_Barker_...\">John Bill and Christopher Barker<\/a> in 1674 and then reprinted by Stephen Swart in 1676.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Paulus Scheltus\u2019 publishing house was also responsible for a number of other formal state publications, which it was contracted to print on behalf of the government. Notably, Paulus signs the marine treaty using the title: \u201cOrdinaris Drucker van de Hoog Mogende Heeren Staten Generael der Vereenighde Nederlanden.\u201d Or, \u201cOrdinary Printer of the High Mighty Lords States General of the United Netherlands,\u201d in English.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As estimated by the dealer who sold the treaty to <em>Lorrendraaier,<\/em> Paulus\u2019 birth year also gives a clue as to the reprinting date of this particular treaty document. Most likely, it would have been published at some point during Paulus Scheltus&#8217; youth, middle-aged, or later years \u2014 from around 1700 onwards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3608 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Paulus-Scheltus.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Paulus-Scheltus.png 800w, http:\/\/lorrendraaier.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Paulus-Scheltus-300x52.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Likely A 1714 Reprint<\/h3>\n<p>According to the publication, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koornwinder.org\/resources\/adresboek.pdf\"><em>Adresboek \u2014 Nederlandse Drukkers en Boekverkopers tot 1700<\/em><\/a> (page 107), Paulus Scheltus was appointed \u201cPrinter of: Council of State 1714-1734, The State 1694-1745, and Provincial State 1688-1745.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As such, it\u2019s safe to conclude that our publication was printed after 1714 when he was appointed as printer of the Council of State.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years, numerous allyships have been forged and shattered.
